UNISON Learning and Organising Services has produced a collection of taster workshops exploring literacy and numeracy concepts in a light-hearted and reassuring way.
These are designed to be run by UNISON learning reps (or branch officers, workplace reps, or organisers) who have completed discussion leaders training or lay tutor training.
They take an hour to an hour and a half to run, and can be used with any group of members or potential members.
Remember that branches in England can apply for Kickstart funding to help support workplace learning opportunities.
Fun with numbers
This workshop encourages participants to think about where maths appears in leisure and culture, and to engage with maths problems in a relaxed environment.
Reading for pleasure
This workshop explores reading habits and preferences, and gives participants a chance to read and discuss a text as might happen at a reading group.
It could offer an opportunity to explore interest in a UNISON reading group or the Reading Ahead challenge.
This workshop introduces some easy creative writing activities. It is designed to build confidence and encourage participants to continue with their own creative writing.
Get into the grammar groove
This workshop offers a light-hearted take on spelling, punctuation and grammar. It gives participants a chance to explore their feelings about written English and introduces some strategies to improve spelling, punctuation and grammar.
