Environmental Officer

The Environmental Officer co-ordinates the union’s green and environmental agenda in the branch.

The job of trade union Environmental Officer involves representing the workforce in discussions and negotiations regarding the development and implementation of company / employer environmental policies and practices.

Green Reps

Green Representatives support the Environmental Officer in achieving these and other goals in the branch.

Both posts are offered the opportunity to attend UNISON’s three module training course. This will enable you to learn about:

  • Inequality and the impact of Climate Change
  • UNISON policy and the role of the environmental officer/green rep
  • Branch Organisation
  • Understanding sectoral impacts of climate change
  • Developing a strategy to approach the employer and formulating a plan
  • Developing a just transition agreement with the employer
  • Building alliances with external organisations

Where there is sufficient resources and capacity, the job can also involve acting on behalf of members as a link person with local environmental campaign organisations such as Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace or Stop Climate Chaos.

Environmental policies and practices can cover areas such as energy use, recycling, travel and procurement.

 

Training

Online and face-to-face training are delivered via UNISON College regional educational teams, whilst online training is also provided by the UNISON College national education team.

Climate Crisis and Green Skills – 7 November 2024

This three module online course over three consecutive Thursday’s (7th, 14th and 21st November) is designed to support branch activists to plan a strategy to engage with environmental issues in the workplace and at a wider level.
