This session will identify the communication differences of Deaf and hearing people, building up an awareness of the many challenges faced by the Deaf community.  This will be an insightful session encompassing many elements of daily life that present additional challenges for Deaf people and people with hearing loss.  This interactive session will demonstrate ways that the hearing world can work with the Deaf community to promote equality and inclusion.

The workshop will be delivered by delivered by Caroline Cleghorn of CC Tutoring.  She has a BA Information Management (Hons) 2.1 and Post Graduate Certificate of Education and is currently awaiting to take her final exam with Signature for British Sign Language Level 4. She has over 20 year of experience as a Digital Complex Needs Further Education Tutor and is also a Specialist Communication Support Worker within the Deaf community.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise some daily challenges that life presents to the Deaf Community.
  • List 2 ways one could get the attention of a Deaf colleague/friend
  • Describe the differences between Makaton, British Sign Language and Sign Supported English
  • Recall the reason why clarity is important when communicating
  • Recognise the advantages of Deaf Awareness Training in Organisations
  • Interpret some basic BSL signs C

Participation expectations

Attendees should expect to be completely engaged and active in this session, either verbally through the micropone or via the chat function and will need to have their camera on for some parts of this workshop.

The session will be held online via Teams from 10:00 to 13:00  on 4th December.

Spaces are limited to 20 per session and will be allocated on a first come first served basis, the session is not recorded and we ask that you only apply if you are able to attend and fully participate.
