Our online Health and Safety course, delivered by experienced TUC tutors at West Thames College, is for newly elected and less experienced UNISON H&S reps organising in the workplace. As a steward, you have an important role to play in organising members at a local level.

The closing date for applications is 22nd June 2026

The course runs for 5 consecutive days from 10am to 3pm from Monday 6th July to Friday 10th July.

It is important to be able to commit to taking part in all five of the sessions, as outlined here:

  • 10am – 3pm Monday 6th July 2026

  • 10am – 3pm Thursday 9th July 2026
  • 10am – 3pm Friday 10th July 2026

The course will help you to:

  • Find out about your role as a UNISON branch health and safety officer;
  • Practise the skills that a branch health and safety officer needs;
  • Gain confidence to support members in the branch effectively;
  • Understand the employer’s health and safety management strategy and your role in engaging with management;
  • Understand the respective roles of health and safety representatives and members;
  • Understand how the branch can operate across more than one employer;
  • Develop an understanding of where you fit within branch organisation;
  • Build branch organisation;
  • Update your knowledge of legal and other standards, and know where to get further information.

To attend the course, you will need IT access and access to MS Teams.

You will need to spend approx 30 hours learning on the course, (which can be requested as facility time from your employer).

The course involves group work and discussion and is a good opportunity to network and share ideas and experiences.

You may be asked to find out information from your branch and employer in advance.
