Making Progress in MS Excel: Level Two

If you have some existing knowledge of Excel functions and wish to enhance and refresh your skills, this course is for you.

 

Learn to organise table data, present data as charts and enhance the look and appeal of workbooks by adding graphic objects. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the necessary skills to:

  • Organise worksheet and table data using various techniques
  • Create and modify charts
  • Manipulate more complex formulas and functions
  • Insert and modify graphic objects in a worksheet
  • Customise and enhance workbooks and the Microsoft Excel environment
Course Content:
  • Review of formulas and functions: Further formulas and functions: Working with dates and percentages: Functions and the formula palette: Absolute Cell Addressing: Displaying underlying formula
  • Printing and formatting: Custom formatting: Hiding columns and outlining
  • Worksheets and workbooks: Working with multiple worksheets: Creating a workspace
  • Working with lists: Filtering data: Sorting data: Analysing data using subtotals
  • Creating charts: Modifying charts: Printing charts: Further customisation
  • Other features: Sharing workbooks: Worksheet auditing: Adding comments
  • We finish by building our own spreadsheet, using the knowledge we have gained.

To get the best out of this online course the attendees should have access to a large screen device.

 

 

Is this course for me?

The main elements of our level two Excel training are listed below. If you feel ready to tackle these, you can probably jump straight to level two. If they look too difficult, you should probably take the level one course first.

  • USING DATES IN EXCEL: How Excel uses numbers to define dates. Using dates in formulas. How Excel displays the time. Finding days of the week.
  • THE EXCEL FORMULA PALETTE. Some examples, such as using ISBLANK, and SUMIF. The difference with SUMIF and SUMIFS. Other useful functions. Linking to a website or email address. Creating a web address.
  • THE IF FUNCTION. An in-depth look at one of Excel’s main formula tools – the IF function. Copying IF functions. Nested IF functions. IF functions with more than one condition. Using conditions that are mutually exclusive.
  • THE VLOOKUP FUNCTION. Another in-depth look at a really useful Excel tool – the VLOOKUP function. We finish by looking at how to combine the IF and VLOOKUP functions in one formula.
  • ABSOLUTE VERSUS RELATIVE ADDRESSING: The difference between Absolute and relative addressing in your formulas. Using Absolute addressing. Locking into a cell reference.
  • CHARTS AND GRAPHS. Chart designs. Basic charts types. Labelling your charts. Creating and labelling graphs. Formatting options for charts and graphs.

Attending the course

This course will be delivered on Teams and it will take place over two morning sessions:

Wednesday 8th February – 9.30am to 1.30pm
Thursday 9th February – 9.30am to 1.30pm

Places on the course are very limited and learners are expected to take part both days and join in hands-on activities. The course is funded by UNISON for members.
