A win-win opportunity

UNISON learning reps from across the South East region gathered in Guildford for a network day earlier this month. Vicki Gibbs, area organiser for education and equalities, organised the event, and spoke about the ‘many joys’ of lifelong learning.

The learning reps discussed their experiences so far.  Presenting learning as a ‘win-win’ opportunity for employers and UNISON to work together had been successful. They had been conducting learning surveys, negotiating learning agreements, and holding workshops.

Looking ahead to Learning At Work Week in May, ULRs are planning workshops on identifying skills, menopause workshops, crafty lunches, stress workshops, and other intriguing events.

The group discussed how to work effectively with local further education colleges and other providers. Oreleo Du Cran, UNISON national learning and development organiser, introduced the range of support and activities available from UNISON at national level, including funding opportunities such as Kickstart.

Networking will continue beyond this event, as the learning reps are keen to keep in contact with each other. The region is planning a training day for lifelong learning coordinators and branch education coordinators on 12 June, and a second ULR network day in August.

The next ULR training course in the South East is in Guildford on 23-25 March – please contact educationse@unison.co.uk for more information.
